Mansions of Charleston
The two finest mansions in the city showcase distinctly different architectures and styles. This entertaining “compare and contrast” is directed by our private guide throughout this walking tour which also features a number of Charleston’s 3500 historic buildings. The restored Nathaniel Russell House, circa 1808, a superb example of Adams architecture. The house is well known for its spiral cantilevered staircase. The interior is a prime example of 19th century decorative arts showcased in an operating City Residence. The garden features an array of indigenous plants in an English inspired garden. The stately Edmondston-Alston House, circa 1825, on Charleston's High Battery, is one of the city's most splendid dwellings. A witness to many dramatic events in Charleston's history, the Edmondston-Alston House is a classic example of the city's changing and sophisticated taste in architecture and decorative arts. Featuring a repository of family treasures, including Alston family silver, furniture, books and paintings that remain in place much as they have been for over a century and a half.

Middleton Place is an 18th Century river plantation and National Historic Landmark and was the home of Henry Middleton, President of the First Continental Congress and his son, Arthur, a signer of the Declaration of Independence. For over two and a half centuries Middleton Place has welcomed and enchanted visitors from all over the world. The 65 acres of landscaped terraces, shadowy allees, ornamental ponds and garden rooms laid out with precise symmetry and balance made Middleton Place the most unique and grand garden of its time.
